Hiking safely.

Well equipped: your checklist for carefree moments in the mountains.

The right equipment can make the difference between an unforgettable hike and an unpleasant experience. Our checklist shows you what you need to take with you on every hike.

Packing your backpack made easy:

  • Rain, cold and sun protection
  • First aid kit (Euro emergency number: 112)
  • Mobile phone
  • Provisions & water (1-2 litres, glucose tablets, nuts, etc.)
  • ID card & cash
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Pocket knife
  • Headlamp
  • Hiking poles
  • Garbage bag for clean hiking
  • Map / GPS device
  • Medication (if necessary)

Even if you're not planning a long hike, don't need to refuel along the way, or want to be back before dark, it's always a good idea to have these things with you. Because sometimes a hike just doesn't go according to plan, the weather changes, or you suddenly run out of energy. And then everyone is glad to have that muesli bar. Or the rain jacket. Or the charged mobile phone. And in an emergency? That's when your first aid kit becomes a real hero.

Pro tip:
It's best to pack items you need frequently in the side or lid compartments. That way, you'll have everything you need quickly to hand.

Choosing a backpack:
Make sure that the back system has good hip padding and can be adjusted to fit your back as closely as possible. For a day hike, we recommend a backpack with a volume of approx. 15-35 litres.

Clothing for all weather conditions.

Choose your clothing according to the season, weather forecast and hike. Breathable clothing and layering are an unbeatable combination. Experienced hikers also rely on breathable materials for their socks to prevent friction. Headgear, rain protection, a change of clothes and warm clothing, as well as sun protection (cap, sunglasses and sun cream) are your must-haves in the mountains.

Beware of unpredictable weather:
The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so warm clothing is essential for any hike.
The temperature difference can be deceptive, especially on higher-altitude tours or summit tours. A fresh breeze at cooler altitudes or a break with a wet back can quickly make things uncomfortable. Therefore, even when the sun is shining, a warm layer or dry change of clothes always pays off.

The perfect outdoor companion:
Merino wool and fleece not only keep you warm, they are also breathable and dry very quickly.

Shoe tip.

Hiking boots: Take a few short and easy hikes to break in your boots before going on a longer tour. They should relieve pressure on your feet, provide better traction and, ideally, be waterproof. A good fit, non-slip soles and a good tread are also important. When hiking on steeper terrain, it is advisable to wear ankle-high hiking boots. If you are unsure, seek advice from experts.

Nothing is better than changing your shoes after a long hike. It is best to pack comfortable shoes in your car.

How to lace hiking boots correctly:

Uphill: Looser at the top of the shaft, tight at the instep – this allows your foot to work better when climbing uphill while still providing good support.

Downhill: Lace more tightly from the bend downwards so that your heel stays in place and your foot does not slip forward – this prevents blisters and bruised toes!
